Moto et vélo, un marché dans l'insécurité

Motorcycles and bicycles, an insecure market

The French motorcycle and bicycle market in 2025 is going through a period of turbulence marked by a significant drop in sales and the closure of specialist points of sale.

The FLUX teams provide a picture of the situation, including a detailed analysis of the evolution of sales of motorcycles, bicycles and accessories.

Decline in sales of motorcycles and scooters

The first months of 2025 were marked by a significant decline in motorcycle and scooter registrations. According to data from Mobilians, the professional organization for automotive services, registrations of two-wheelers of 125 cc and above fell by 15.4% in January 2025 compared to the same period the previous year.

This trend was confirmed in February, with an accentuation of the decline.

The factors behind this situation

Several factors explain this downward trend. The introduction of the Euro 5+ standard (pollutant emissions) has led to an anticipation of purchases until the end of 2024, causing a mechanical decline in sales at the beginning of the year. With this standard, motorized two-wheeler manufacturers must adapt their vehicles to comply with stricter rules.

Moreover, persistent inflation has reduced consumers' purchasing power, prompting them to postpone or cancel their plans to purchase two-wheelers.

The creation of ZFE or even ZTL - as in the Marais in Paris - now prohibits the passage of certain scooters or motorcycles, which limits the possibility of moving around city centers.

Finally, the introduction of paid parking for motorized two-wheelers in certain large cities, notably Paris, has deterred some potential buyers.

State of the bicycle market

The bicycle segment, particularly e-bikes, has also experienced fluctuations. After several years of sustained growth, sales slowed in 2025.

Consumers, faced with an uncertain economic climate, have adopted a more cautious attitude, impacting sales of high-end and electric bikes.

Not to mention the considerable price increases applied by some manufacturers. Sometimes 20 to 30% increase for the same bike.

Major bicycle brands in difficulty

The market is currently undergoing a dramatic reversal. Several industry giants, such as Specialized, Trek, and Giant, have had to reduce their workforce and adjust their production in the face of declining demand.

In 2023 and 2024, many brands accumulated unsold inventory due to overproduction in anticipation of demand that ultimately did not materialize.

Companies like VanMoof, known for its high-end electric bikes, have even been forced to file for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties.

This situation highlights the fragility of the bicycle market, which, despite a transition towards greener mobility, is struggling to stabilize its sales in the face of inflation and global economic uncertainties.

Motorcycle accessories and equipment: a suffering market

The decline in vehicle sales has directly impacted the market for two-wheeled accessories and equipment. Specialist retailers have recorded a decline in their turnover, a direct result of the drop in registrations. This situation has led some stores to reduce their activity or even close their doors.

You only have to walk along the Avenue de la Grande Armée in Paris, or in the Beaumarchais district to appreciate the extent of the damage.

Regional disparities: focus on Paris and the regions

The situation varies significantly by region. In Paris, the introduction of paid parking for motorized two-wheelers has had a deterrent effect on sales. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with this measure, viewing it as an additional tax. As a result, sales of scooters and motorcycles have suffered particularly badly in the capital.

The situation is mixed in the regions. Some rural areas have seen a slight increase in two-wheeler sales, as residents seek economical alternatives to cars. However, in large cities, competition from public transport and soft mobility solutions has slowed market growth.

Perspectives and adaptations of the motorcycle and bicycle sector

Despite this challenging environment, the two-wheeler sector is adapting. Manufacturers and distributors are banking on innovation to boost sales. The development of more affordable and efficient electric models is central to these strategies. In addition, efforts are being made to improve the design and comfort of vehicles, meeting the expectations of a demanding urban clientele.

Accessories are also evolving, with an increased offering of connected and secure products. Protective equipment now incorporates advanced technologies, combining safety and aesthetics. This is the case for VEST PARIS in clothing as well as helmets. This evolution aims to attract customers who are image-conscious while seeking optimal protection.
